On March 1, 1984, Peugeot decided to release the GTI. It is first available in version 1.6 (XU5J) 105 hp. Only available as a three-door, it made a good impression from the start and quickly competed with the Golf I, which had become dull and poor in equipment. The Golf was equipped with sheet metal rims against standard 14-inch aluminum rims reminiscent of those of the Turbo 16 for the 205. This had plastic fender flares, moldings and bumpers with red edging, “1.6” logos. and “GTI” on the rear quarter pillars, additional headlamps in the front bumper valance, ventilated front disc brakes, large rear drums, cloth bucket seats, optional electric windows and the characteristic red carpet.
In 1998, following the launch of the Peugeot 206, production of the 205 stopped after a sixteen-year career.
Today the 205 GTI is an icon of the Youngtimer phenomenon and is seeing its rating soar.
