In 1968, the Ford Escort Mk1 succeeded the ageing Anglia, rapidly becoming an extremely popular model on the European market. At the top of the engine range was the famous 1600 Twin Cam developed for the Cortina Lotus. The idea of fitting this high-performance engine to the new Escort, which was particularly light and agile, was born in the mind of Henry Taylor, Director of Ford’s Competition Department.
To demonstrate the validity of this choice, Ford Boreham began developing prototypes at the end of 1967 with a view to homologating the Ford Escort Twin Cam in Group 2 (for rallying) and Group 3 (for circuit racing). As soon as it made its rally debut, the Gr.2 Twin Cam racked up major successes on both gravel and asphalt, thanks in particular to Roger Clark, Hannu Mikkola, Tony Fall and Gilbert Stapelaere.
Most often in the company of Jean Todt, the young French hopeful Jean-François Piot also shone at the wheel of a Ford Escort Twin Cam bearing the colours of the oil company BP. This is the livery worn by this superb Group 2 Ford Escort Twin Cam (chassis #22 – GBATJP87922) originally built for homologation in 1968, restored and fitted with a pre-1973 body. It is fitted with a genuine Ford Lotus Twin Cam (116E) double ACT block and a 4-speed ZF gearbox with a Banjo axle.
This Twin Cam Gr.2 has been built to a very high standard and has taken part in the Rallye du Maroc Historique on several occasions. It has been fully restored to its authentic state, with the correct small bumpers and wing extensions, for example. It also has a polyester boot and bonnet, as well as magnesium wheels.
